Situations explained

What to take from your house after a fire (if you're allowed in)

A short list of what to grab if the fire department lets you in briefly, and what to leave.

If the fire department says it's safe to go in for a few minutes, have a short list ready. Wear sturdy shoes and a mask.

Take

Medications, glasses, ID, wallets and phones, chargers, important documents, laptop if it's dry and clean, pet supplies, and one or two irreplaceable items.

Leave

Food, cosmetics and anything soaked or heavily sooted. Those are either unsafe or need professional cleaning.

Photograph on the way
